Another head coaching vacancy has been filled as the Tennessee Titans have hired 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh. Now, with our of ten openings, four of them have been filled while the Pittsburgh Steelers continue to work through their own opening.
Saleh was the New York Jets’ head coach from 2021 to 2024, where he was fired midseason. After being a consultant for the Green Bay Packers in the latter half of the season, he re-joined 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco.
Saleh was the defensive coordinator in San Francisco from 2017 to 2020 and 2024, and now gets a second head coaching chance with the Titans.
Saleh was a tight end at Northern Michigan in 1997 through 2000 before heading into his coaching career in 2002 as an offensive assistant at Michigan State. He climbed through the college ranks before the Houston Texans hired him as a coaching intern in 2005.
The Steelers never interviewed Saleh for their open head coaching job, and outside of Jeff Hafley, all the candidates they have interviewed for the gig are out on the market. Hafley was hired by the Miami Dolphins on Monday.
The Steelers plan to host Brian Flores, Mike McCarthy, and Anthony Weaver for in-person interviews this week.
