READING, Pa. – The state is giving nearly a quarter of a million dollars to make it easier to access a shopping center in southwest Reading.

The Gerry Street Connector Project was awarded $242,596 in grant funding from the Commonwealth Financing Authority and aims to create a walking trail linking Gerry Street to Lancaster Avenue Plaza.

“This funding will deliver a vital pedestrian connector for our community,” said State Rep. Manny Guzman (D – Berks,) who helped secure the funding. “The Gerry Street Connector Project will improve safety, accessibility and connectivity for residents and visitors, while strengthening links between our neighborhoods.

The shopping center is home to the Ideal Food Basket grocery store and several restaurants and other shops.

It opened in 2020 at the former A.W. Golden dealership.
