West Pittston Historical Society Anthracite Heritage Month program: 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30. Trinity Episcopal Church, Montgomery Avenue and Spring Street, West Pittston. Mining engineer Justin Emershaw, of the Atlantic Carbon Group, Hazleton, will present “Slopes, Shafts and Planes: The Mechanics of Mining.” Program will include how and why mine shafts and planes were located and how the surveyors direct the miners on where the tunnels and shafts are in the mine. How engineers find coal for a viable mine operation and historic and modern day techniques also will be discussed. Free. There is an elevator at the church.
