The Philadelphia Eagles have missed out on arguably their top offensive coordinator candidate.

Mike McDaniel is expected to become the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers, according to a Tuesday night report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

McDaniel, the former Miami Dolphins head coach, was pursued as the “top OC target” for the Eagles and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington.

“The Bucs were especially diligent in their courtship, and McDaniel was very engaged with them throughout,” Darlington wrote. “Ultimately, the lure of getting back to California and coaching Justin Herbert proved strongest.”

McDaniel, 42, is known for his creative, run-heavy scheme. Before being fired, he compiled a 35-33 record with the Dolphins, utilizing playmakers like Devon Achane, Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle to stretch the field.

Before he was hired by the Dolphins, McDaniel made his name as the 49ers’ OC in 2021 and their run game coordinator from 2017-20.

Now, he’ll return to California to coach Justin Herbert and the Chargers’ offense — and the Eagles will be left searching for a Kevin Patullo replacement.

McDaniel and former Giants head coach Brian Daboll were “at the top” of the Eagles’ wish list after firing Patullo, according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini.

The Eagles were scheduled to interview Daboll on Tuesday. Philadelphia has also reportedly met with or scheduled with several other OC options.
