Forecasters are becoming more confident that a significant storm could impact the Lehigh Valley over the weekend.

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly, New Jersey, has been monitoring a system that could hit the area Saturday into Sunday and bring several inches of snow into the area.

A map released Wednesday by the weather service showed the Lehigh Valley having a roughly 70% chance of 6 inches of snow or more. South of the region, closer to Philadelphia, has a higher likelihood. Snowfall could begin Saturday and continue into early Monday morning, but forecasters said specifics will become more clear over the next few days.

A lot of uncertainty still remains regarding the total snow amounts, and it depends on how the system appears to be tracking, according to the weather service.

“Twenty-four hours ago this looked like more of a question of a near ‘miss’ to the south vs. a big snowstorm,” forecasters wrote Wednesday morning in their daily forecast discussion. “Now it`s looking like a more or less a lock that this storm will affect the area with significant (precipitation) with the question then shifting to whether the track actually gets too far north to bring a mix or changeover into the area.”

After last weekend’s snowfall, 16.7 inches of snow have fallen in the Lehigh Valley this winter, which is about an inch less than what fell all last season. Snowfall for this time of year for the region is normally about 11 inches, according to weather service data.

The rest of the week should be clear and cold, with lows reaching the single digits again Friday and Saturday.
