The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for Berks County, warning of dangerously low wind chill temperatures expected late Friday into Saturday morning.

The advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. Friday through 10 a.m. Saturday. Forecasters say wind chill values could drop as low as 12 degrees below zero, creating hazardous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors.

According to the National Weather Service, the extreme cold increases the risk of frostbite and hypothermia, particularly when skin is left unprotected. Prolonged exposure to the cold, even with temperatures above zero, can quickly become dangerous when combined with wind.

Residents in Reading and throughout Berks County are urged to take precautions when outdoors, including wearing warm, layered clothing, hats, and gloves. Travel outside during the overnight and early morning hours should be limited when possible.

Officials also advise keeping pets indoors as much as possible during the advisory period to prevent cold-related health issues.

The Cold Weather Advisory is part of a broader alert covering portions of eastern Pennsylvania and neighboring states, but Berks County residents are encouraged to closely monitor local conditions and plan accordingly as the coldest temperatures arrive late Friday night.
