Erie Public Schools have released a statement on how the school decides the schedule during unpleasant weather conditions. The school decides on the schedule based on the welfare, health, and safety of the staff and students.

The school district understands that the schools are in some cases the warmest, safest, and most reliable environments for those in attendance.

Weather-related closures are provided as soon as possible to ensure parents and guardians have notice. These notices are decided and sent out by 5:30 a.m. For those in the Erie Public School district can check the ParentSquare platform, the district Facebook page, on the eriesd.org website and through local media. Parents and guardians are encouraged to stay connected on communication channels. The school can assist those who would like to be enrolled on ParentSquare signed up.

If announcements are not on the communications pages by 5:30 a.m. it should be assumed that the schools will be operating as normal.

In cases of inclement weather parents may opt to keep their children at home however in the case of less than 10 excused absences the final absence will be excused with the submission of a written note. If a child has more than 10 excused absences the absence will be unexcused. All written excuses will be accepted if there is an announcement of a “Parent Discretion Day.”

Erie’s Public Schools do not utilize two-hour delays due to inclement weather due to busing schedules and other challenges.

Flexible Instructions Days allowing students to work asynchronously will no longer be implemented. In leu of this the school has provided “Snow Make-Up Days” throughout the calendar in case of school closures. This calendar can be viewed on Events | Erie’s Public Schools.

Questions and concerns can be directed to students’ principals.

The school district would also like to remind parents and guardians to park on the right side of the street in the right direction during drop-off and pick-up. Blocked lanes of sight can cause children to pass in active lanes causing safety and traffic issues. Posted speed limits should be followed, and drivers should be on the lookout for students walking.

Those who walk to and from school should ensure that the marked crosswalks are being utilize and that appropriate weather attire is worn. Those in need of winter outerwear should contact their school’s Community School Director for their child’s needs to be met.

Parents of students who walk to and from school: Please make sure your children use marked crosswalks and are dressed appropriately for the weather. If your child needs winter outerwear, please contact your school’s Community School director.
