Lehigh Valley municipalities are wasting no time trying to get ahead of the expected snow storm this weekend.

Allentown was among the cities, boroughs and townships pre-emptively announcing snow emergencies. Mayor Matt Tuerk said he issued the emergency declaration “out of an abundance of caution” because of the projected snowfall totals.

While there is still high uncertainty over the exact forecast, the National Weather Service on Thursday morning said there is increasing confidence in a “major winter winter storm,” with anywhere between 8 and 21 inches of snow possible in the Lehigh Valley.

Tuerk said city crews will begin plowing roads early Sunday as snow begins, but warned residents that it could take several days to clear all side streets and alleys. Police Chief Charles Roca asked the public not to drive on Sunday unless absolutely necessary.

Below is a list of Lehigh Valley municipalities that have declared snow emergencies and other restrictions:

Allentown has declared a snow emergency starting at 11 a.m. Saturday. Residents must not park on snow emergency routes Vehicle owners can park at the Allentown Government Deck free of charge beginning at midnight Friday, officials said.

Palmer Township has not yet declared a snow emergency, but is reminding residents to be aware of all snow emergency routes in the township. When a snow emergency is declared, residents must move vehicles from designated streets. Vehicles that are not moved will be ticketed and towed. Salisbury Township has declared a state of emergency ahead of the impending winter storm event beginning midnight Sunday through noon Monday. More info at salisburylehighpa.gov.
