ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Big changes are coming to a long-term plan to revitalize Allentown’s waterfront.

The Waterfront Development Company has announced major updates to its master plan for the 29-acre project along the Lehigh River.

Developer, Zac Jaindl, says the new version scales back on office space.

Instead, it will be more of a “lifestyle campus” to accommodate growing housing needs in the region.

“So really what we did was we looked at what both the neighborhood as well as the city at large is looking for, and really what the region needs in regards to a waterfront campus,” said Jaindl. “Because the waterfront, itself, is one of the only sites in the entire Lehigh Valley where you can directly interact with the Lehigh River in a neighborhood setting.”

The project has been in the works since 2012, but developers say the Covid-19 pandemic, which led to more people working from home, prompted them to change their plan to its current version.

They say the plan could change again, depending on the economy.
