The Reading Parking Authority will provide free parking to city residents due to the predicted snowstorm.

The National Weather Service is calling for 12 to 17 inches of snow for Berks County, starting early Sunday.

All city-owned parking garages will be open and available for public use from noon Saturday through 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Surface parking lots are not included.

The measure is intended to reduce on-street parking and allow city crews to safely and efficiently clear the streets, the authority said in a release.

City residents are encouraged to move their vehicles to a garage so snowplows can clean the streets as effectively as possible.

The 6th and Cherry streets parking lot will be reserved exclusively for approved emergency vehicles during the same period. To support emergency response operations throughout the storm, the lot will not be open to the public.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to use the available garages and assist in keeping streets clear.
