OBITUARY

John Klohonatz, 98, of Dickson City, PA, passed away on January 17, 2026 in Latrobe, PA.

John was born in Dunmore to Martin Kahanec and Mary Solak Kahanec on March 5, 1927. He went to high school at Dunmore High School. A World War II veteran, John volunteered with the Merchant Marines in the Philippines and served in the Aleutian Islands with the Army Air Corps. He worked as a Machinist & Quality Control Representative and traveled the world for Acker Drill Company for 36 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, sports, especially baseball, visiting casinos, especially with his brother Stanley, competing with the family to grow the best garlic, and, to those who knew him, storytelling, especially about his travels. John was a member of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church.

John is survived by his son Mark and daughter-in-law Joy of Greensburg, PA; two cherished grandchildren: Kristin of Newark, Delaware, and Nicholas, along with his wife Alison of Durham, North Carolina; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife Otilia Mortko; his son Jan; his mother and father, Mary Solak and Martin Kahanec; his brother Stanley Kahanec; and sisters, Helen Connery, Pauline Cerritani, Mildred Topalanchik, Margaret Kossage, Mary De Venuta, Ann Loyko, and Sally Syrylo.

John’s funeral will be Tuesday, January 27th, 2026, at 9:30am in the Frank T. Mazur Funeral Home, Inc., 601 Dundaff St., Dickson City, PA, 18519, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in St. Mary’s Visitation Church, Dickson City, Monsignor Patrick Pratico celebrating. Interment, St. Mary’s Visitation Cemetery, Dickson City. Friends and family may call Monday, January 26th, from 5-7pm at the funeral home.
