A Westmoreland County woman was charged with homicide after police said she called 911 and admitted to shooting her husband.
Fifty-one-year-old Leeann Steel is accused of killing her husband, William Steel, at their home in Hempfield Township over the weekend, the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office announced.Â
Police said Leeann Steel called 911 on Saturday and told dispatchers that she had shot her husband and he needed medical attention. When troopers got to the home on Merlin Lane, they said they found William Steel in a bedroom surrounded by blood. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.Â
“It appears she shot him in the chest,” said Pennsylvania State Police trooper Steve Limani.Â
Investigators said they found a Beretta Tomcat that appeared to have been recently fired on the front porch.Â
“There was some kind of argument. whether there was a physical aggression from Mr. Steel toward her we weren’t able to determine there was physical evidence to support that and he has difficulty moving in general,” said Limani, explaining that William Steel used walking devices to help him get around.Â
Troopers said they found Leann Steel in the yard of a neighborhoing home. She was arrested and arraigned on a single count of criminal homicide, the district attorney’s office said. She was denied bail.
Investigators said they’re now trying to find a motive. The couple had been married for 29 years.Â
“Unfortunately, when people are married — we’ve been dealing with this for 27 years of my career — sometimes it turns violent for really not what you would consider as an outsider a valid reason for any two people. It’s a shame, domestic violence is a real thing,” Limani said.Â
