New Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy is ‘intrigued’ by the possibility of Will Howard and his upside, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Howard is one of two quarterbacks under contract for next season along with Mason Rudolph. He did not play in a game this year, serving as the emergency third quarterback for much of the season after breaking a bone in his hand during training camp last year.

“They do have other options on the roster,” Pelissero said. “Mason Rudolph is under contract. Will Howard, a late-round draft pick last year out of Ohio State that they are really high on in the building. My understanding is Mike McCarthy also is very intrigued by the upside of Will Howard.”
Howard, a former Ohio State star and Pennsylvania native, is in his first season with the Steelers after being drafted by Pittsburgh in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He impressed in his limited time at training camp before the injury, and was on track to win the QB3 job. However, zero in-game reps for Howard is a splash of cold water on any thoughts about Howard.
Still, the Steelers point to him as the young quarterback on the roster, and with so many questions about a dwindling quarterback class in 2026, Howard remains an intriguing developmental option for the Steelers.
