READING, Pa. – The owner of the Berkshire Mall in Wyomissing, Namdar Realty Group, tells 69 News the property is under contract to be sold.

According to a report in the Philadelphia Business Journal, the plan is to demolish everything, except Berks County-based Boscov’s.

CEO Jim Boscov has told us on numerous occasions the store plans to stay there regardless of what happens with the mall.

The nearly 60-acre property is decades old and has had problems that borough officials say spanned from stormwater issues to safety concerns, which led to parts of the parking lot being closed for the past year.

There are a number of stores that remain open inside.

The Philadelphia Business Journal report says “Abrams Realty and Development” plans to redevelop retail space on site which won’t include residential use.

Wyomissing Mayor Fred Levering says he’s pleased with what he’s hearing, and he says he thinks they’re headed in the right direction finally.

State Senator Judy Schwank sent the current owner a letter back in August saying invest in the mall or sell it.

Her office sent a statement about the sale saying quote: “Senator Schwank has made it clear that the Berkshire Mall property is too important to our region to sit idle without proper investment or a clear plan for its future. She welcomes any developer willing to invest in Berks County and partner with the necessary stakeholders to bring the property back to life.”
