Honesdale wrestler Nathan Schuman captured the 109-pound title at the Coal Cracker Invitational on Saturday at Lehighton High School.
The Hornets sophomore, who is ranked third in the state at 114 pounds in Class 2A according to PA Power Wrestling, went 6-0 with two first-period pins, three technical falls and a major decision to roll to the crown.
After a 4-0 mark Friday, Schuman secured an 11-3 major decision over Germantown Academy’s Dylan Deck, who is ranked 15th at 106 in the National Prep rankings, in the semifinals. He secured two takedowns in the first period, a reversal in the second and another takedown in the third to advance to the final.
Then, he dominated Faith Christian Academy’s Riley Crandall, ranked seventh in the state at 106, in the final. Schuman had two takedowns in the first, second and third periods, along with an escape and a penalty point, to secure a 20-5 tech. fall at 5:08 for the title.
Schuman, who is 36-1 this season, led Honesdale to a fifth-place finish with 156.5 points in the 57-team tournament. Faith Christian won the tournament with 265.5 points, Germantown Academy was second (166.5), Central Dauphin (162.5) third and Salesianum fourth (161.5).
Duke Martin (191) and Bobby MacDowell (287) both went 6-2 and placed fifth and seventh, respectively, for the Hornets.
Abington Heights’ Mason Whitney and Mid Valley’s Matthew Almedina each placed second in their respective weight classes.
Whitney (135) went 5-1 with two pins, two tech. falls and a major decision. The Comets junior had a close battle with Faith Christian’s Freddy Bachmann, the No. 1 wrestler in the state in Class 2A at 127 and the No. 5 wrestler in the nation, in the final. Bachmann got a first-period takedown and a third-period escape for a 4-0 decision over Whitney, the No. 4 wrestler in the state at 133 in Class 3A who is 38-4 this season.
Brady Full (129) placed third and Lucas Drake (152) and Frank Scialpi (215) each took sixth, as Abington Heights finished sixth.
Full, a freshman who is ranked eighth in the state, lost to Hanover Area’s CJ Caines, ranked fourth in the state in Class 2A, in the semifinals by ultimate tiebreaker. Full has been Caines’ toughest challenge all season, also losing to the Hawkeyes sophomore by 5-2 decision earlier in the season. Caines is 35-0 this season with 24 pins, five tech. falls, three decisions and three forfeits. Full finished 6-1 with two pins, two tech. falls, one major and one decision. His only two losses in contested bouts this season are against Caines.
Almedina (141) went 5-1 with two pins, one tech. fall, one major and one decision. In the final against Kennett’s Blake Boyer, ranked second in the state at 139 in Class 3A, the Mid Valley senior took a 1-0 lead on a stalling call in the second period, but Boyer escaped in the third to force overtime, where he secured a takedown for a 4-1 sudden victory. Almedina, ranked 17th in the state at 139 in Class 2A, is 24-5 this season.
Wallenpaupack’s Gio Lomonaco (135) placed fifth, and Western Wayne’s Gavin Morcom (1662) finished eighth.
Quakertown Duals
Zion Colon went 5-0, Drew Churchill and Jeremiah Segal each went 4-1 and Michael Seltzer went 3-2, as Delaware Valley went 1-4 at the Quakertown Duals.
The Warriors beat West Chester Rustin (37-32), and lost to Quakertown (48-12), Bethlehem Liberty (43-19), Delaware Military Academy (48-18) and Saucon Valley (51-14).
West Scranton went 0-5, losing to Bethlehem Liberty (69-6), Delaware Military Academy (58-12), Quakertown (63-8), Saucon Valley (63-12) and West Chester Rustin (63-6).
