Joyce Ann Leach

OBITUARY

Joyce Ann Leach, beloved wife, mother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 10th, surrounded by her loving family.

Adored by so many, she is survived by her devoted husband of over 49 years, Jim; her children, Andrew (Laura) and Adriana Sandhu (Udae); her siblings, Victor Gowat (Theresa), Greg Gowat (Mary), Mary-Alice Skasko (Mike), and Matthew Gowat (Kim); and several nieces, nephews, and lifelong friendships spanning 73 years across the world.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rita and Leo Gowat; her brother, Jerry Gowat; and three beloved beagles, Barney, Bailey, and Bonnie. Her life was defined by warmth, curiosity, strength, perseverance, and a spirit that embraced adventure and connections.

Joyce was the proud mother of two children, who were the great joys of her life. She poured her heart into her family, creating a home open to everyone she met, filled with laughter, traditions, and the kind of love that leaves an imprint on everyone fortunate enough to meet her.

Joyce was a true citizen of the world, exploring it with enthusiasm, always eager to discover new places and enjoy new experiences. Having made homes in Australia, Canada, Brazil, and the United States, she brought her whole heart to every place she lived. From Fern Hill School in Canada to Graded The American School in So Paulo, she didnt just participate – she became part of the fabric of those communities. People felt her kindness immediately. But, of all the destinations she visited, Positano, Italy held a special place in her heart. Its beauty, charm, and sense of serenity mirrored so much of what she cherished in life.

She also found deep friendships through the clubs she joined along the way – Franklin Country Club, The Oakville Club, Topeka Country Club, Clube de Campo de So Paulo, Elkview Country Club, and especially Colleton River Club, where she was a beloved and long-standing member. Wherever she went, Joyce had a way of settling in with ease.

She had a gift for bringing people together, often around a card table. Whether it was a lively game of Canasta or a thoughtful round of Mahjong, Joyce found joy in the camaraderie, strategy, and shared moments these games created. Her competitive spark and easy smile made her a favorite partner – and opponent.

At home, Joyce found joy in the kitchen, cooking meals that wore out countless Ina Garten cookbooks. She also had a lifelong love for Beagles, whose gentle nature and loyal companionship matched her own.

Joyce will be remembered for her kindness, her humor, her unwavering love for her family, and the grace with which she moved through the world. Her legacy lives on in the countless memories she created and the people she touched.

She will be deeply missed and forever loved.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 7th, at St. Ann’s Monastery and Shrine Basilica in Scranton, PA. A private celebration of life will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to FANA (familiesoffana.org) or to a charity of your choice.
