Helen May Shollenberger

OBITUARY

Helen May (Blatt) Shollenberger, 98, formerly of Tilden Township, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2026.

She was the beloved wife of Lee J. Shollenberger who passed away August 31, 2020. They were married May 21, 1949, and celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary in 2020.

Born in Center Township, Helen was the daughter of the late James and Eva (Noecker) Blatt. Helen graduated Salutatorian from Ontelaunee High School in 1945.

Helen was an active member of St. Michael’s Church where she taught Sunday School and served as president of The Women of St. Michael’s for several years. You could count on Helen to help prepare food and waitress at church suppers and picnics. For many years, Helen was active at the Kutztown Folk Festival organizing hostesses, waiters, and waitresses and working in the pie corner for the church food stand.

Helen worked at the election polls for Tilden Township for many years. She also served as Den Mother when her son was in Cub Scouts and assisted with Girl Scouts and 4-H when her daughter participated in these activities.

Helen was the first teacher’s aide hired by Hamburg Area School District where she served 21 years. She enjoyed working with the students and faculty alike.

Helen is well known for having sold World Book Encyclopedias for 33 years. She was truly an advocate for education.

Helen enjoyed cooking, baking, and spending time with family. A favorite family activity was playing Scattergories. Helen always came up with the best responses!

Helen is survived by a son, Dean, widower of Rachelle, Harleysville; and a daughter, Darlene, wife of Randy Wenhold, Allentown; three grandchildren, Amy (Shollenberger) wife of Jacob Garges; Austin Shollenberger, husband of Laura; and Leah (Wenhold), wife of Jacob Parente; five great-grandchildren, Tayler and Eva Garges, Eric and Grace Shollenberger, and Evangeline Parente; and one brother-in-law, Roy Shollenberger, husband of Anna, Hamburg. Helen was predeceased by her beloved sister, Gladys Kieffer.

Helen’s family would like to extend a special thanks to the caring staff at the Atrium of Allentown and the therapists from FOX Rehabilitation. Helen was also under the wonderful care of Dr. Kevin Shah and Dr. Mehul Nagarsheth.

A funeral service will be held at Thursday, January 29, 2026 at St. Michael’s Church, 529 St. Michaels Rd., Hamburg, PA 19526. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery. A viewing will be held from 9:45 a.m. to 11 a.m. prior to the service in the church. Leibensperger Funeral Home, Hamburg, is in charge of arrangements.
