(WKBN) \u2014 Pennsylvania State Police is unveiling new patrol vehicles, complete with new technology that PSP says will protect communities and support troopers.<\/p>\n

These enhancements are designed to improve visibility during traffic stops and other emergency responses. They include a distinctive V-shaped light bar that provides full 360-degree illumination, GPS\u2011based vehicle\u2011to\u2011vehicle communication and a new 400-watt siren system.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese upgrades represent a major step forward in safety, visibility and operational efficiency,\u201d said\u00a0Lieutenant Colonel George Bivens, Acting Commissioner of the PSP. \u201cThis department has long set the benchmark for professionalism and innovation, and with this cutting\u2011edge technology, we will continue to lead by example and set new standards for law enforcement across the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n

PSP will be one of only two law enforcement agencies in the nation with advanced sound capability, meaning drivers should be able to hear a PSP emergency vehicle much faster than before, and troopers should be able to clearly and immediately communicate with the public.<\/p>\n

Troopers will also have access to a selection of voice commands \u2014 commonly used for traffic stops and incident responses \u2014 in both English and Spanish.<\/p>\n

The V-shaped light bar is designed to \u201cdramatically increase visibility\u201d compared to the traditional linear light bars. It also functions as an auxiliary brake light during hard braking, an arrow board for traffic control, and a floodlight for use in dark, hazardous environments. In low-light conditions, when the vehicle is parked, an automatic dimming feature enhances vision at night and reduces glare.<\/p>\n

The 2025-26 state budget invests in new patrol vehicles to replace high-mileage units in the PSP fleet. State troopers patrol 44,000 miles of Pennsylvania highway, so it\u2019s not uncommon for their patrol vehicles to reach 200,000 miles before replacement, according to a release from PSP. The budget also includes funding for four additional PSP cadet classes.<\/p>\n
