HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) \u2014 Even routine traffic stops can quickly turn dangerous, which is why the Pennsylvania State Police made some changes to their patrol vehicles.<\/p>\n

The upgrades that were unveiled Thursday by State Police are designed to improve visibility during traffic stops and emergency responses.<\/p>\n

Patrol vehicles are equipped with a V-shaped light bar that provides a wider light spread, increasing visibility compared to traditional linear bars. GPS-based vehicle-to-vehicle communication will synchronize a flashing pattern and voice commands with other nearby patrol units. The light bar also works as an auxiliary brake light during hard braking, an arrow board for traffic control and a floodlight for use in dark, hazardous environments.<\/p>\n

Other than lighting, expect to be able to hear the vehicles better when they have emergency lights activated. A 400-watt siren system that includes four speakers and a low-frequency Rumbler device was also installed. There is only one other law enforcement agency in the United States that has this sound capability, other than the Pennsylvania State Police.<\/p>\n

The hope is that motorists will be able to hear, see, and react better to State Police vehicles responding in an emergency, and that will lead to an increase in safety for Troopers and the public.<\/p>\n

The light and siren control panel was changed to make it easier to use, as when a Trooper activates their emergency lights, the controls go into a hands-free mode and the public address system remains at full volume.<\/p>\n

With the 2025-26 Pennsylvania budget, State Police were able to replace vehicles that have high miles on them.<\/p>\n
