EASTON, Pa. – Local overnight shelters are trying to keep up with the relentless cold weather.<\/p>\n
Volunteers in Easton are hoping the community can help them continue to help others stay warm. \u2002<\/p>\n
Inside of the Christ United Methodist Church on West Berwick Street in Easton is a warming shelter.<\/p>\n
With the frigid temps outside, things inside are busy.<\/p>\n
“We’re definitely seeing an influx in people, definitely. We originally started off around 25 and with the cold we are up to like 50 at least,” says Richann Hunsicker, Founder of Warm Hearts PA.<\/p>\n
“Some of these people, they’re coming in near frostbite, and we’re here trying to just give them that little bit of warmth or that little bit of time that we’re doing,” Rebekah Rutledge, Outreach Coordinator of Christ United Methodist Church.<\/p>\n
Every Monday and Wednesday through March, volunteers from the church and Warm Hearts PA provide a hot meal, beds, and supplies like coats to anyone who needs them.<\/p>\n
“For people that are homeless and that don’t have nowhere to go, they should be able to just chill and hang out and be able to sleep and eat,” says Heidi Miller, a guest.<\/p>\n
With the increase in guests, the organizations are asking for donations, so that they can keep people warm, fed, and taken care of, throughout the cold winter months ahead.<\/p>\n
“To sustain, we’ve had to reach out to the community. Lately we’ve started an Amazon wish list. We’re trying to be that one-stop-shop to be there as a listening ear, to be there as somebody that’s supplying them shelter for the night, but more or less look at them as an individual that just needs some help and we’re here to help them,” says Rutledge.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"EASTON, Pa. – Local overnight shelters are trying to keep up with the relentless cold weather.
