Eli Lilly<\/a> plans a $3.5B pharmaceutical manufacturing<\/a> facility in Upper Macungie\n<\/p>\n

Project will create 850 new jobs, the largest in Lehigh Valley history<\/p>\n

Pennsylvania is investing $100M to secure the project\n<\/p>\n

Construction on the seven-building campus begins this fall, opens by 2031\n<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Local and state economic development officials, including Gov. Josh Shapiro<\/a> are joining executives from Eli Lilly in Allentown\u00a0Friday, to announce what is being described as the single largest economic development project ever in the Lehigh Valley\u2019s history as well as the largest pharmaceutical investment in Pennsylvania.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

Lilly will be investing\u00a0$3.5 billion\u00a0to create a new, state-of-the art pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Upper Macungie Township<\/a> that will bring 850 new jobs to the region.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

Don Cunningham, executive director of the Lehigh Valley Economic Development<\/a> Corporation,\u00a0which\u00a0worked with state economic development officials to secure the\u00a0investment,\u00a0called the news an enormous win for the region.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s been nothing comparable since the days of Bethlehem Steel, which grew slowly over a century, with our workers producing the steel for America\u2019s skylines and bridges and the armaments to help win two world wars,\u201d Cunningham said. \u201cToday, Eli Lilly and Company write the first page of a new chapter \u2013 the era of life sciences \u2013 in the Lehigh Valley\u2019s proud history of making things in America.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

Construction on the facility is expected to begin in the fall on property\u00a0off of\u00a0Old Route 222 that was owned by the Jaindl family and is already zoned for pharmaceutical manufacturing.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

Governor Shapiro\u00a0said the state is\u00a0investing $100 million to support the manufacturing\u00a0site\u2019s\u00a0project in the Lehigh Valley, noting that Pennsylvania\u00a0competed aggressively against other states to win\u00a0the\u00a0project.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

He noted that this\u00a0will be the first Lilly manufacturing facility in Pennsylvania and\u00a0said it\u00a0represents\u00a0a long-term commitment to the\u00a0state\u00a0from one of the world\u2019s leading drugmakers.\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we announced our Economic Development Strategy here in the Lehigh Valley two years ago, we set out to win historic, life-changing deals like the one we\u2019re announcing with Lilly today,\u201d said Shapiro.\u00a0\u201cLilly\u2019s commitment to the Lehigh Valley and to Pennsylvania will bring billions of dollars of investment and hundreds of good-paying jobs, solidifying our position as a leader in the growing life sciences industry<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

Lilly received a funding proposal from DCED for up to $50 million in tax credits through the PA Edge Tax Credit Program, a $25 million grant through the PA SITES (Pennsylvania Strategic Investments to Enhance Sites) Program, and a $25 million Pennsylvania First grant. The state has also committed to providing a Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) award of up to $5 million to a local community college and\/or technical school to help create a workforce development training program that would serve as a talent pipeline for the company in the Lehigh Valley.\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\u201cTo meet increasing demand,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0expanding our U.S. manufacturing network, with Lehigh Valley adding capacity for next-generation weight-loss medicines.\u00a0We\u2019re\u00a0creating high\u00a0quality jobs and collaborating across the region\u2014with suppliers, educators, and\u00a0workforce\u00a0development\u00a0partners\u2014to make critical medicines in the U.S.,\u201d Ricks told more than 200 local and state dignitaries\u00a0at Friday\u2019s announcement. \u201cThat\u2019s our commitment\u2014to patients, to our new Pennsylvania home, and to our country.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

In December, Lilly became the first drugmaker to reach\u00a0$1 trillion\u00a0in market value, buoyed by sales of weight loss and diabetes medications including\u00a0Mounjaro\u00a0and\u00a0Zepbound. The company\u2019s expansion here is part of its plan to grow manufacturing in the U.S, with new facilities also planned in Virginia, Texas, and Alabama.\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
