{"id":101426,"date":"2026-01-31T06:44:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-31T06:44:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/101426\/"},"modified":"2026-01-31T06:44:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-31T06:44:10","slug":"pennsylvania-sinfonia-orchestra-winter-vivaldi-one-from-the-heart-lehigh-valley-press","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/101426\/","title":{"rendered":"Pennsylvania Sinfonia Orchestra \u201cWinter Vivaldi\u201d one from the heart \u2013 Lehigh Valley Press"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cOnce again, we have a wonderful mix of music offerings for our patrons and this time we have two works by Antonio Vivaldi to really underscore our name of \u2018Winter Vivaldi,\u2019\u201d says Simon Maurer, Concertmaster of the Pennsylvania Sinfonia Orchestra (PSO).<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">The Pennsylvania Sinfonia Orchestra presents \u201cWinter Vivaldi,\u201d 3 p.m. Feb. 1, Christ Lutheran Church, Allentown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">Says Maurer, \u201cThe concert starts with \u2018La Musica Notturno delle Strade de Madrid\u2019 [\u2018The Night Music of the Streets of Madrid\u2019], a raucous, energetic piece by composer Luigi Boccherini.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">Italian-born Boccherini (1743-1805) moved to Madrid in 1768 after touring with long-term professional collaborator and touring partner Italian violinist Filippo Manfredi (1735-1793). Boccherini then entered the service of the Infante of Spain Don Luis de Borbon as cellist and composer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cIf Madrid at the time of Boccherini was anything like it is today, it was a town that comes to life at night with food, music, wine and merrymaking, even past midnight,\u201d Maurer says, adding, \u201cJudging from the music, it indeed seemed to be the case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">Next is Georg Friedrich H\u00e4ndel\u2019s beautiful and intimate \u201cViolin Sonata, Op. 1 No. 13,\u201d featuring violinist Inna Eyzerovich and harpsichordist Benjamin D\u2019Annibale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">Says Maurer, \u201cH\u00e4ndel liked the fourth movement so much that he used it in later compositions for larger ensembles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">Guest vocalist Robin Terrill Bier is featured in Vivaldi\u2019s \u201cAmor, hai vinto\u201d (\u201cLove, you have conquered\u201d), a dramatic Italian cantata of unrequited love, a tale of love\u2019s power over the heart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">Vivaldi\u2019s \u201cViolin Concerto in E minor,\u201d RV 278, opens the concert\u2019s second half, featuring concertmaster Maurer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cMany of Vivaldi\u2019s violin concerti are light and happy. This one, much like the aria, has unusual emotional depth,\u201d Maurer says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">The concert closes with Father Se\u00e1n Duggan\u2019s performance of Johann Sebastian Bach\u2019s \u201cKeyboard Concerto in D minor No. 1,\u201d BWV 1052, marking Duggan\u2019s 21st year as \u201cWinter Vivaldi\u201d soloist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cThis concerto is the best-known and most frequently performed solo keyboard concerto by Bach, one of seven, eight if an incomplete one is counted,\u201d says Duggan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cIt has become something of a tradition for \u2018Valley Vivaldi\u2019 to include a different Bach keyboard concerto every winter. Over the past twenty-years, the cycle of Bach\u2019s keyboard concertos has been traversed twice. The present performance initiates the third go-around,\u201d Duggan says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">Robin Terrill Bier is a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory of Music with advanced degrees from the University of York, England. Her solo appearances include J.S. Bach\u2019s \u201cChristmas Oratorio,\u201d BWV 248, with the Baroque Collective and East Sussex Choir, and Bach\u2019s \u201cSt. John Passion\u201d at the York Early Music Festival. Bier co-directs the vocal chamber ensembles Bright Cecilia and Les Canards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">Fr. Se\u00e1n Duggan, Order of Saint Benedict, pianist, is a monk of St. Joseph Abbey, Covington, La. He received a Bachelor of Music from Loyola University, a Master of Fine Arts from Carnegie Mellon University and a Master of Arts in Theological Studies from Notre Dame Seminary, New Orleans, La.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">Prior to joining the Benedictine order, he was pianist and Assistant Chorus Master for the Pittsburgh Opera Company. Duggan has performed with the New Mexico Philharmonic Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, American Chamber Orchestra and the Shanghai String Quartet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cWinter Vivaldi,\u201d Pennsylvania Sinfonia Orchestra, 3 p.m. Feb. 1, Christ Lutheran Church, 1245 Hamilton St., Allentown.
