{"id":101682,"date":"2026-01-31T17:06:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-31T17:06:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/101682\/"},"modified":"2026-01-31T17:06:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-31T17:06:12","slug":"deep-freeze-limits-commercial-traffic-on-pittsburghs-rivers-as-ice-jams-disrupt-supply-chain-wpxi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/101682\/","title":{"rendered":"Deep freeze limits commercial traffic on Pittsburgh\u2019s rivers as ice jams disrupt supply chain \u2013 WPXI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">This week\u2019s deep freeze is chilling operations and business along the waterways in and around the region\u2019s waterways and the Port of Pittsburgh, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/pittsburgh\/news\/2024\/06\/25\/20-people-to-know-transportation-mary-ann-bucci.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the second-biggest inland port in the United States and a key economic driver<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Plunging temperatures led the U.S. Coast Guard on Jan. 23 to issue a warning due to ice accumulation on the rivers but the weekend snowstorm and then below-zero low temperatures overnight have led to the formation of even more widespread ice. That has led to restrictions on the rivers as well as much less activity than normal for January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s rough right now. This is a once-in-a-decade type of freeze,\u201d said Shane Checkan, head of the navigation committee of the Waterways Association of Pittsburgh and general manager of Industry Terminal &amp; Salvage Co. in Beaver County. \u201cWe haven\u2019t seen this kind of ice since 2015, 2018.
