SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) \u2014 Prolonged bitter cold has prompted a series of Code Blue frigid weather alerts across Scranton and Lackawanna County, with emergency officials declaring multiple overnight warnings this week as dangerously low wind chills continue.<\/p>\n
The Lackawanna County Emergency Management Agency and the City of Scranton say Code Blue alerts will remain in effect through Sunday morning, covering six consecutive nights of extreme cold. Wind chills during this stretch are forecast to drop into the single digits and well below zero, with the coldest night expected Saturday night into Sunday morning.<\/p>\n

Code Blue alerts are issued when temperatures or wind chills are expected to fall below 20 degrees, activating emergency plans to protect vulnerable residents, particularly those without stable housing.<\/p>\n
During each Code Blue period, emergency shelters and warming centers in Scranton will be open:St. Anthony\u2019s Haven, 409 Olive Street; Open nightly from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m.Weston Field House, 982 Providence Road; Opens nightly at 7:30 p.m.Community Intervention Center (CIC), 445 North Sixth Avenue; Open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with extended hours if conditions require<\/p>\n
