SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE\/WYOU) \u2014 Celebrations of the stories from long ago and the stories still unfolding were part of a local display for Black History Month. The public can check out and learn from the exhibit in Scranton.<\/p>\n
Photographs from more than a half-century ago were on display and had an important story to tell, they helped illustrate Black history and The Civil Rights Movement in Scranton.<\/p>\n
The non-profit, Black Scranton Project, put together the photo display: all part of a larger exhibit unveiled Sunday at an event billed as the \u201cCentennial Celebration.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have so many people here. Lots of familiar faces, new faces, and it\u2019s just always fun to see people network and just seeing artists connecting with other artists is always the coolest thing,\u201d Black Scranton Project Founder and CEO Glynis Johns said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s great! It\u2019s a collaborative meeting joining together, and that\u2019s what we really need to do is work in collaboration with each other,\u201d Lackawanna County NAACP President Brenda K. Johnson said.<\/p>\n
Also on display were more art pieces and local historical artifacts, but simply by being in the former PNC Bank building, people engaged in history.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re celebrating 100 years of the beautiful bank that is now our non-profit\u2019s home, and we are getting together as a community,\u201d Johns added.<\/p>\n
Jessup Giuseppe makes winter season prediction <\/a><\/p>\n The work that Johns put in to showcase how Scranton is rich with Black history was not lost on anyone who stopped by.<\/p>\n \u201cHistorically, she always puts different things up, she switches out the history,\u201d Johnson remarked. \u201cSo, I go around videoing and taking pictures of all the new history that she\u2019s put up. It\u2019s a lot of history in Scranton.\u201d<\/p>\n Johns described the project as a labor of love and one that will continue creating spaces for people to foster community.<\/p>\n \u201cI just want people to think creatively about Black History Month. It\u2019s my favorite month of the year, and I don\u2019t think it\u2019s enough days.
