FRANKLIN COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) \u2014 A nurse who helped save the life of a Pennsylvania State Trooper following a shooting on I-81 during rush hour months ago was honored.<\/p>\n

WellSpan Health York Hospital registered nurse Jeffrey Kauffman was presented with the Daisy Award for helping save the life of Trooper Lucas Ambrose<\/a>, Pennsylvania State Police announced Monday. The award is given to nurses who go above and beyond their duties to care for patients.<\/p>\n

Kauffman is credited with helping to save the life of Trooper Lucas Ambrose, who was shot when a gunman opened fire on him and fellow Trooper Thomas Pack near Exit 3 on Interstate 81 in Antrim Township in October after a high-speed chase.<\/a><\/p>\n

Ambrose was hospitalized for days after the shooting in serious condition<\/a>, while Pack was released from the hospital the following day.<\/p>\n

Even though Pack and Ambrose were shot multiple times by 31-year-old Lamar Foy, they were able to return fire and kill him after he got out of the vehicle and ran toward the Troopers while shooting at them.<\/p>\n

The Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner at the time, Christopher Paris, described during a press conference<\/a> how tourniquets and trauma first aid kits were critical in saving Pack\u2019s and Ambrose\u2019s lives. Franklin County District Attorney Ian Brink justified the use of force by police, further saying that it was \u201cabsolutely necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cfierce gunfight\u201d happened after Troopers were chasing suspects in a retail theft at a Dick\u2019s Sporting Goods. The suspects were in a van, being driven by Foy, that eventually came to a stop in a grassy area by the exit on I-81.<\/p>\n

Two women \u2013 Amir Swift and Giani McGowan, both of Baltimore\u00a0\u2013 were in the van as shots rang out but they were able to safely escape. State Police said they also found a \u201clarge quantity\u201d of drugs inside the van.<\/p>\n
