PORT CLINTON, Ohio (WTVG) \u2014 Two people fell through ice on Lake Erie Monday when their four-wheeler broke through a crack, prompting a rescue response and renewed safety warnings from local officials.<\/p>\n
Port Clinton Fire Chief Brian Gutman said the individuals were about two miles north of Port Clinton when they encountered one of several three-foot cracks that have opened on the lake.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen they came across one of those cracks and the four-wheeler fell through and they were thrown off of their four-wheeler into the water, thankfully, they were able to get themselves out,\u201d Gutman said.<\/p>\n
Port Clinton police and fire department responded first, with assistance from the Ottawa County Sheriff\u2019s Office and U.S. Coast Guard. The sheriff\u2019s office used a heated amphibious vehicle called a sherp to transport the individuals and begin warming them.<\/p>\n
Both people were brought back to land and evaluated by medical personnel. Both refused further care.<\/p>\n
Gutman said the incident serves as a reminder about ice safety, particularly for those using motorized vehicles.<\/p>\n
\u201cTypically, when you\u2019re moving on a snowmobile or four-wheeler, you don\u2019t actually see those cracks until you\u2019re in them,\u201d Gutman said.<\/p>\n
Port Clinton first responders train regularly for water and ice rescues. Gutman urged caution for anyone planning to go out on the ice.<\/p>\n
