{"id":105248,"date":"2026-02-04T20:49:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T20:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/105248\/"},"modified":"2026-02-04T20:49:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T20:49:08","slug":"city-holds-open-call-for-original-quote-to-be-inscribed-on-harriet-tubman-statue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/105248\/","title":{"rendered":"City holds open call for original quote to be inscribed on Harriet Tubman statue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After asking Philly artists to submit designs for a\u00a0Harriet Tubman statue, the city is now tapping local writers to craft an inscription for\u00a0the monument that will soon be placed outside City Hall.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 15-foot sculpture, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/harriet-tubman-statue-philadelphia-art-commission-approval\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">approved in January 2024<\/a>, will feature a quote from the\u00a0abolitionist on two sides of the base. In addition to Tubman&#8217;s own words,\u00a0Creative Philadelphia, the city&#8217;s office of arts and culture, is holding an open call\u00a0through March 1\u00a0for an original quote from someone who lives or works in Philly that will be etched into the back of the base.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/philadelphia-monopoly-board-game\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gaming company is seeking nominations for landmarks to include in Philly edition of Monopoly<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLScFt1A92FvJQw-C84XYUCNoLUr0qRKSajd9NI5kzikj97wVhg\/viewform?mc_cid=5bef309d8f&amp;mc_eid=afaf5e2399\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Submissions<\/a>\u00a0must be a one- to two-sentence response to the question: &#8220;What does it mean to walk in Harriet Tubman&#8217;s footsteps today?&#8221; The answers are meant to reflect the 19th century civil rights activist&#8217;s impact on future generations. The replies can be literal, narrative or metaphorical, but they must be completely original and unattributed to any existing person or entity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The artist wants viewers to stand behind the statue and be inspired by her strength and leadership, and feel invited to follow in her footsteps,&#8221; Creative Philadelphia Communications Manager\u00a0Morgan Nitz said in an email to PhillyVoice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Following the end of the submission period, a selection committee of city employees, the sculpture&#8217;s artist\u00a0Alvin Pettit\u00a0and an unnamed Philadelphia-based writer will put together a short list of 10 quotes. Those entries will be shared in a public survey, and Philly residents will choose the winner. The selected quote will appear on the statue attributed to &#8220;A Philadelphia citizen,&#8221; but the writer&#8217;s name will be on the piece&#8217;s credit panel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Alvin Pettit\u2019s design, &#8216;A Higher Power: The Call of a Freedom Fighter,&#8217; will depict Harriet Tubman during her time serving in the military, commemorating her strength, resolve, and legacy as a soldier,&#8221;\u00a0Val Gay, executive director of Creative Philadelphia, said in a statement. &#8220;Now, it will also reflect a Philadelphian who is inspired by her leadership.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tubman&#8217;s\u00a0quotes on the statue will be:\u00a0\u201cAnd I prayed to God to make me strong and able to fight,\u201d and \u201cFor no man should take me alive; I should fight for my liberty as long as my strength lasted.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Philadelphia got the idea for a statue of Tubman after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/traveling-harriet-tubman-statue-philadelphia-city-hall\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">temporary display<\/a>\u00a0of her was installed outside of City Hall in 2022. Officials initially gave the artist of that sculpture a $500,000 commission to create a permanent statue for the city, but that decision was met with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/harriet-tubman-statue-city-hall-open-call-artist-submission-philadelphia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">backlash<\/a> due to the lack of open submissions. Pettit&#8217;s design was picked out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/harriet-tubman-statue-philly-designs-proposals-vote\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">five finalists<\/a> following an open call.<\/p>\n<p>Pettit&#8217;s sculpture\u00a0was inspired by\u00a0Arnold Friberg&#8217;s\u00a01975 painting\u00a0of George Washington, which shows the founding father praying in the woods.
