{"id":107621,"date":"2026-02-07T03:56:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-07T03:56:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/107621\/"},"modified":"2026-02-07T03:56:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-07T03:56:11","slug":"newman-pulls-away-to-beat-scrappy-short-handed-erie-prophetstown-shaw-local","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/107621\/","title":{"rendered":"Newman pulls away to beat scrappy, short-handed Erie-Prophetstown \u2013 Shaw Local"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">Although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shawlocal.com\/tags\/erie-prophetstown-preps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.shawlocal.com\/tags\/erie-prophetstown-preps\/\">Erie-Prophetstown<\/a> was playing short-handed in Friday night\u2019s Three Rivers East matchup at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shawlocal.com\/tags\/newman-central-catholic-preps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.shawlocal.com\/tags\/newman-central-catholic-preps\/\">Newman<\/a>, the upset-minded Panthers were threatening to hand the Associated Press Class 1A third-ranked Comets their second loss in three games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">But Newman\u2019s depth helped make the difference as E-P ran out of gas down the stretch and the Comets won 63-54.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">E-P (10-9, 3-4) was playing without leading scorer Connor Keegan, who was out due to illness while dealing with a shoulder injury, E-P coach Ryan Winckler said. Winckler said he should be back next week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">The Panthers led 15-14 after the first quarter and trailed just 48-45 after holding Newman (26-1, 7-1) to just eight points in the third quarter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">Then, Asher Ernst scored seven straight points to give Newman a 55-45 lead. The Comets outscored E-P 15-9 in the fourth quarter. Ernst finished with a game-high 16 points and John Rowzee added 12 and two blocks. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">\u201cI think we were lucky that they didn\u2019t have their best player [Keegan], but I think we rebounded good in the second half,\u201d Rowzee said. \u201cWe had three turnovers at half, that really helped us as well. We kind of brought the pressure back and we were able to cover the low post.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">Gus Schultz led the Panthers with 15 points and Evan Steimle had 13. Ethan Lavine added nine points and freshman Caleb Brown (nine points) hit a trio of 3-pointers in the third quarter to help keep E-P in striking distance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">In the fourth quarter, E-P\u2019s shots started to fall short and passes were intercepted. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">Keegan averages around 16 points and is one of E-P\u2019s top outside shooters. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">\u201cBeing able to extend the defense really could have helped open up even more inside,\u201d Winckler said. \u201cI thought we attacked inside so well tonight, but just having our best shooter out there I think would have really helped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">Newman had six players combine for seven 3-pointers in the second quarter, but E-P continued to battle, trailing 40-33 at halftime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ImageMetadata__MetadataParagraph-sc-1gn0vty-0 ijEZZk image-metadata\"> Newman&#8217;s George Jungerman  gets past E-P&#8217;s  Evan Steimle. (Brian Hurley)<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">Newman coach Ray Sharp said E-P is coached well and plays hard, which makes them a tough out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">\u201cAnd they execute really well,\u201d he said. \u201cThey got really good stuff against our 1-3-1.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">After losing their first game of the season last week at Mendota, the Comets responded with a second straight win. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">\u201cWe played really poorly that night offensively and defensively,\u201d Sharp said. \u201cI think it just made them understand we\u2019ve still got to get better every night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">\u201cIf we don\u2019t match their intensity, we\u2019re going to get beat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">\u201cThat kind of motivated us,\u201d Rowzee said, \u201cand we don\u2019t want to feel that again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">Newman can still share the conference title should the Comets and Trojans both win out. Mendota has games against Princeton, E-P and Kewanee left. (Brian Hurley)<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">Against E-P, Newman finished strong after a third-quarter lull. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">\u201cThey have eight, nine guys they can rotate through and they\u2019re so physical with the style that they play, up and down the court,\u201d Winckler said of Newman. \u201cWe were just exhausted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">\u201cAlmost every one of our shots were short in the fourth quarter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">Winckler was proud of the effort as the Panthers continue to show they can hang with good teams.
