SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – The Sioux City City Council has passed the first reading of a change to an ordinance that will increase the cost of garbage and recycling collection.<\/p>\n
If it passes all three readings, the ordinance would amend the municipal code on solid waste to increase fees paid to Gill Hauling as part of a 2023 agreement. Collection fees would go up by 3 percent.<\/p>\n
Citizens would see a roughly 50-cent increase per trash bin per month. Mayor Pro Tem Julie Schoenherr said while rising costs aren\u2019t favorable, the gradual increase helps citizens when budgeting.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe way we designed this contract, and we negotiated for a long time on it, was to keep them small incremental amounts so it doesn\u2019t hurt that family budget or that single person or that elderly person\u2019s budget as much as dollars would,\u201d Schoenherr said.<\/p>\n
Mayor Bob Scott proposed the city look into absorbing this year\u2019s increase which would keep cost the same for citizens. The first reading of the ordinance passed on a 4-to-1 vote with Council Member Rick Bertrand casting the only \u201cno\u201d vote.<\/p>\n
Trail project receives additional funding<\/p>\n
The City Council also voted in favor of a resolution approving a $100,000 increase for McClure Engineering Company for finishing touches on the PlyWood Trail Project.<\/p>\n
Matt Salvatore, director of Parks and Recreation, says the additional funding will come from the \u201cDestination Iowa\u201d grant and private funding. Salvatore says despite delays to what he says is the largest trail project in the history of Woodbury County, he is pleased with the work that has been done.<\/p>\n
When complete, the trail will span from Le Mars to Sioux City. It\u2019s meant to be a transportation link for bicycle and pedestrian travel.<\/p>\n
