Lake Erie is about 95% ice-covered \u2014 and the next few days could decide whether it fully freezes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"byline\">\n\t\t\t\t\tBy<br \/>\n\t\t\t\tBrian Lada, AccuWeather meteorologist\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Published Feb 9, 2026 3:35 AM CST\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t|<\/p>\n<p>Updated Feb 9, 2026 4:32 AM CST\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"feature-tag\">\n\t\tA massive 80-mile-long crack split the ice on Lake Erie on Feb. 8, stretching from Port Burwell, Ontario, to Cleveland.\n\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block content-module\">\n\tLake Erie is almost completely iced over, and over the weekend, the frozen surface split open in dramatic fashion.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block content-module\">\n\tA crack stretching more than 80 miles formed Sunday, running from near the Canadian side of the lake toward the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/us\/cleveland\/44113\/weather-forecast\/350127?city=cleveland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Cleveland<\/a> area. The break opened up after strong winds swept across the Great Lakes Friday and Saturday, pushing and pulling the lake\u2019s ice as another blast of Arctic air poured into the region.\n<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Maybe the ice really IS all it\u2019s cracked up to be on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/LakeErie?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">#LakeErie<\/a>! \ud83e\uddca<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NOAA?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">@NOAA<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/GOESEast?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">#GOESEast<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/GOES19?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">#GOES19<\/a>) satellite captured a massive fracture forming in the lake ice yesterday. It was approximately 80 miles long, stretching from Port Burwell, Canada, to near Cleveland, Ohio. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/aQpeP8raYo\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/aQpeP8raYo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 NOAA Satellites (@NOAASatellites) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NOAASatellites\/status\/2020842517647024322?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">February 9, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block content-module\">\n\tThe striking split isn\u2019t unheard of when Lake Erie is heavily frozen. As winds shift or ease and temperatures fluctuate, large sheets of ice can drift, collide and separate, creating long, jagged openings across the lake.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block content-module\">\n\tThose same winds also shoved ice toward parts of the shoreline, where it can pile up into ridges and create hazards, including the risk of property damage in vulnerable coastal areas.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block content-module\">\n\tAs of this week, Lake Erie was about <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.glerl.noaa.gov\/coastwatch\/webdata\/statistic\/ice\/dat\/g2025_2026_ice.dat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">95% ice-covered<\/a>, according to NOAA\u2019s Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block content-module\">\n\tDespite the bitter cold over the past weekend, the wind has helped keep some pockets of open water on the western end of the lake. Whether Lake Erie can \u201cclose the gap\u201d and reach 100% coverage may come down to the next few days \u2014 especially if winds relax long enough for ice to spread and lock in.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block content-module\">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.glerl.noaa.gov\/data\/ice\/glicd\/AMIC.txt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Lake Erie<\/a> has reached 100% ice coverage only three times since record-keeping began in 1973.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"feature-tag\">\n\tIce mounds form along the shoreline of Lake Erie February 4, 2026, in Hamburg, New York. (Photo by John Normile\/Getty Images)\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block content-module\">\n\t&#8220;Signs point towards a bit of a warmup in mid-February that may limit the chances of completely freezing,&#8221; AccuWeather Great Lakes Expert Brandon Buckingham added.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block content-module\">\n\tIce coverage can also shape spring weather around the Great Lakes. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/weather-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">AccuWeather<\/a> is already predicting a cooler-than-normal spring in the region, and extensive ice can delay the arrival of shoreline warmth \u2014 especially for communities within a few miles of the water.\n<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<a class=\"typo\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/contact\/?type=typo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Report a Typo<\/a><\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Strong winds and Arctic air helped fracture the frozen surface over the weekend.
