The Reading Symphony Orchestra presents \u201cValentine\u2019s with Romeo & Juliet\u201d on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Santander Performing Arts Center in Reading. The program includes Selections from Puccini\u2019s \u201cLa Boh\u00e8me,\u201d \u201cLe Villi,\u201d \u201cGianni Schicchi,\u201d \u201cEdgar\u201d and \u201cTurandot\u201d; selections from Tchaikovsky\u2019s \u201cSleeping Beauty\u201d and \u201cEugene Onegin\u201d and Tchaikovsky\u2019s \u201cRomeo & Juliet.\u201d Andrew Constantine conducts, and featured soloists are soprano Toni Marie Palmertree and tenor Charles Reid. Renowned violinist Hilary Hahn performs Prokofiev\u2019s Violin Concerto No. 1 with the Philadelphia Orchestra today through Saturday at Marian Anderson Hall in the Kimmel Center. Eric Carle<\/p>\n

\u201cSmall Living Things: The Magical Art of Eric Carle\u201d opens Saturday at the Michener Art Museum in Doylestown. The exhibition highlights the small creatures from Carle\u2019s collection with original artwork from \u201cThe Very Hungry Caterpillar\u201d and other popular books, as well as larger animals from his \u201cBrown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?\u201d collaboration with Bill Martin Jr. There are examples of process art and sketches, poster designs, an early advertisement, and objects representative of Carle\u2019s influence in contemporary culture. Exhibits opening<\/p>\n

Two new exhibits are opening at the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center in Pennsburg this month.<\/p>\n

A commemoration of the country\u2019s 250th anniversary \u2014 Who Lived in the Perkiomen Valley in the 1700s? \u2014 opens Saturday. At 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the opening day, curator Emma Hartman will present stories based on her research about the region\u2019s population at the time of the American Revolution, with an emphasis on African Americans. The art show Hex Signs is open through April 6, featuring works by Berks County hexologist and folk artist Hunter M. Yoder. These traditional Pennsylvania Dutch barn stars incorporate symbols rooted in pre-Christian Germanic traditions.<\/p>\n

The center is at 105 Seminary St. and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4. Admission is free. More information at www.schwenkfelder.org\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u2018Dirty Dancing\u2019 in Concert<\/p>\n

The Pacifica Quartet performs Thursday at 7:30 in Kutztown University\u2019s Schaeffer Auditorium to mark the 250th birthday of the United States. The program includes Antonin Dvorak\u2019s \u201cAmerican\u201d Quartet, Charles Ives\u2019 Quartet No. 1 and Erich Wolfgang Korngold\u2019s Quartet No. 3. Pacifica\u2019s second violinist Austin Hartman is a native of Bryn Mawr. Cirque Mechanics<\/p>\n

Johnny Gandelsman<\/p>\n

Violinist Johnny Gandelsman performs \u201cThis is America\u201d on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Church, 20 N. American St., Philadelphia, and Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Prince Theatre at the University of Pennsylvania\u2019s Annenberg Center. Ice harvesting<\/p>\n

An ice harvesting demonstration is scheduled for Saturday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Historic Dreibelbis Farm near Virginville. The event, presented by the Dreibelbis Farm Historical Society, will include a demonstration of antique ice harvesting tools and (weather permitting) cutting and harvesting ice blocks from the pond. It was rescheduled from last weekend due to frigid weather.<\/p>\n
