(WPVI) — Water and gas have been restored to a majority of customers in Conshohocken after a massive sinkhole opened up on West 10th Avenue.

Crews responded to the area around 10 p.m. Wednesday night to find water pouring down the street. Neighbors say a short time later, a sinkhole opened up.

The damage left dozens of residents in the neighborhood without heat and water.

“I heard it’s like at least 12 feet deep,” said resident Elisabeth Most.

People in the area were shocked to see the hole grow to be nearly as wide as the street.

“Somebody could have drove into that hole. That’s a pretty big hole,” said Mike Moyer of Conshohocken.

Elisabeth Most said she heard a loud bang and ran outside. She recorded a video from her front porch showing water from the broken main shooting up into the street.

“Moments after, my neighbor across the street moved his car, the sinkhole opened up,” Most said.

The hole continued to expand, and crews spent much of Thursday inside it repairing the water main and underground gas equipment that was damaged.

“We were pretty alarmed. We were like, ‘Uhh, we smell gas!'” Most said.

“We went out and could smell the gas; we had to keep the door shut. Then, after a while, we turned the water on, no water. No gas, heat was off,” Moyer said.

At one point, 83 PECO customers were without gas service, and about 50 Aqua customers were without water.

Some families left the neighborhood to seek warmer shelter.

“We’ll stay somewhere warm. Hopefully it’s resolved by tonight,” said Erin Catalino of Conshohocken.

“I know some neighbors have already gotten a hotel or they’re staying with family,” Most added.

For those who remained, workers delivered cases of water and brought in a water truck so residents could fill buckets.

“It probably could have been way worse. Luckily, no one’s car fell in; luckily, nothing exploded. It’s scary stuff,” Most said.

As of the latest update, all but six PECO customers have had their gas service restored. Those six customers will be without gas until early Friday morning, and a spokesperson said they were provided space heaters.

A spokesperson for Aqua said all but four customers had their water turned back on by 5:30 p.m. on Thursday night.

Copyright © 2026 WPVI-TV.
