(WHP) \u2014 Gov. Josh Shapiro announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/dced.pa.gov\/download\/housing-action-plan-2026\/?wpdmdl=128767\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Housing Action Plan<\/a> on Thursday aimed at addressing Pennsylvania\u2019s housing needs over the next 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>The plan was created to help contend with \u201ca growing gap\u201d between housing supply and demand, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED).<\/p>\n<p>The DCED reports that the state is projected to be nearly 185,000 homes short of the projected housing demand in 2035. Additionally, the department said housing costs and instability are increasing across the state.<\/p>\n<p>The action plan is built around five goals the Shapiro administration hopes to achieve by 2035:<\/p>\n<p>Build and preserve Pennsylvania\u2019s housing stock by becoming a leader in new housing construction among neighboring states (Indiana, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey and Ohio).Expand housing opportunities for all Pennsylvanians by cutting the equity gap for minority homeownership by 25%.Provide pathways to housing stabilization and sustainability by achieving the lowest rate of homelessness per capita among neighboring states.Modernize Pennsylvania\u2019s housing development regulations by bringing down the cost of building and preserving homes.Achieve operational excellence across state and local government by becoming the top state among neighboring states for comprehensive housing outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>The plan and its goals were developed via data analysis, surveys and roundtables held in 13 Pennsylvania communities, including Harrisburg and Lancaster.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe every Pennsylvanian deserves the dignity and security that comes with a safe, affordable place to call home,\u201d Shapiro said in a statement. \u201cAnd in turn, safe, affordable housing will unlock more opportunity for the people of Pennsylvania.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"HARRISBURG, Pa.
