While parts of Pennsylvania\u2019s job market are slowing, home care agencies say opportunities remain available for those looking for work.<\/p>\n
HARRISBURG, Pa. \u2014 Pennsylvania ranks third in the nation for WARN notices \u2014 formal filings companies submit when they plan large layoffs \u2014 according to data highlighted by the Keystone Research Center.<\/p>\n
But the slowdown isn\u2019t universal.<\/p>\n
Stephen Herzenberg with Keystone Research told FOX43 the ranking is a reflection of both Pennsylvania\u2019s industrial mix and a cooling labor market. \u201cEver since that database was created, Pennsylvania unfortunately tends to be fairly high on the list,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Herzenberg said WARN notices don\u2019t always mean layoffs will happen immediately, but they signal companies are anticipating cutbacks. On top of that, workers have less leverage than compared to a year ago. \u201cThe Pennsylvania job market, like the national job market, is weaker than it was a year ago,\u201d Herzenberg said. \u201cThere aren\u2019t as many job openings relative to the number of unemployed workers.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, homecare providers are struggling to hire even as demand climbs. By 2030, one in three Pennsylvanians will be over age 60, according to Cody Jones with the Pennsylvania Home Care Association. Jones told FOX43 that the workforce gap is already significant.<\/p>\n
“In 2026, we’re going to be about 20,000 nurses short of what we really need to completely fulfill the need,” Jones said. \u201cIf we’re not investing in these career paths to increase the bandwidth, we just can’t handle the amount of people that need the level of care that they provide.”<\/p>\n
Without more direct care workers and in-home nurses, industry leaders warn families may have limited options \u2014 sometimes forcing loved ones into hospitals or nursing homes instead of allowing them to age at home.<\/p>\n
