The U.S. Food and Drug Administration<\/a> has issued a warning to restaurants, retailers and consumers about oysters harvested in Canada that may be contaminated with norovirus.<\/p>\n

The oysters in question were harvested by Stellar Bay Shellfish of British Columbia, Canada, on Dec. 30, 2025; Jan. 20, 2026; Jan. 26, 2026; and Jan. 29, 2026. They came from harvest area BC 17-20 (Nanoose Bay) CLF 1401656.<\/p>\n

They were sold with the brand names Kusshi, Chrome Point, Stellar Bay or Stellar Bay Gold.<\/p>\n

The oysters were distributed to restaurants and food retailers in Pennsylvania as well as California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New York and Washington.<\/p>\n

The FDA said the oysters should not be eaten and should be thrown away.<\/p>\n

Oysters contaminated with norovirus can cause illness if eaten, and potentially severe illness in people with compromised immune systems. <\/p>\n

Food containing norovirus may look, smell and taste normal. Consumers experiencing symptoms should contact their health care provider and report their symptoms to their local health department.<\/p>\n

Diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting and fever may be associated with gastroenteritis infections caused by norovirus.<\/p>\n

A person usually develops symptoms 12 to 48 hours after being exposed to norovirus. Most people with norovirus get better within one to three days.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> said anyone who eats raw shellfish \u201cis at risk of contracting norovirus. Children younger than 5 years old, older adults and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop severe infections.\u201d<\/p>\n

The FDA said it was advised on Feb. 3 by the Washington Department of Public Health about an illness outbreak associated with the oysters.<\/p>\n

On Feb. 5, the California Department of Public Health issued a recall <\/a>of the oysters.<\/p>\n

Restaurants and retailers are advised to control the potential for cross-contamination by cleaning and sanitizing food contact surfaces and utensils.
