A federal judge ordered the Trump administration to restore a historical exhibit at the President\u2019s House site in Philadelphia<\/a>, Pennsylvania, recognizing the story of nine slaves of former President George Washington, who resided in the city between 1790 and 1797, when it was the capital of the United States. The \u201cFreedom and Slavery in the Making of a New Nation\u201d exhibit was removed in January as a result of President Donald Trump<\/a>\u2018s executive order, \u201cRestoring Truth and Sanity to American History.\u201d<\/p>\n

After its removal, the city filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, claiming the federal government lacked the authority to order its removal because of prior agreements between Philadelphia and the federal government, WPVI reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Federal District Judge Cynthia Rufe ruled<\/a> that the exhibit\u2019s removal, which told an account of the slaves\u2019 lives, denied Philadelphia and Independence National Historical Park the opportunity \u201cto honestly and accurately tell the story of its own history.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEach person who visits the President\u2019s House and does not learn of the realities of founding-era slavery receives a false account of this country\u2019s history,\u201d Rufe said.<\/p>\n

Rufe also referenced George Orwell\u2019s 1984 when explaining her decision.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAs if the Ministry of Truth in George Orwell\u2019s 1984 now existed, with its motto \u2018Ignorance is Strength,\u2019 this Court is now asked to determine whether the federal government has the power it claims \u2014 to dissemble and disassemble historical truths when it has some domain over historical facts,\u201d Rufe said<\/a>. \u201cIt does not.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also explained<\/a> the legal basis for her decision, specifically noting earlier legislation that restricted the Trump administration\u2019s \u201climited\u201d authority to \u201cunilaterally alter or control\u201d the presence of exhibits in Independence National Historical Park.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe government can convey a different message without restraint elsewhere if it so pleases, but it cannot do so to the President\u2019s House until it follows the law and consults with the City,\u201d said<\/a> Rufe in the ruling.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s executive order was issued<\/a> in March 2025. Its objective was to remove any historical markers or displays that displayed a \u201cfalse reconstruction of American history\u201d or promoted \u201cpartisan ideology\u201d which \u201cinappropriately disparages Americans past or living.\u201d He mentioned ideologically motivated historical revisionism that has tainted the nation\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnder this historical revision, our Nation\u2019s unparalleled legacy of advancing liberty, individual rights, and human happiness is reconstructed as inherently racist, sexist, oppressive, or otherwise irredeemably flawed,\u201d read<\/a> the executive order. \u201cRather than fostering unity and a deeper understanding of our shared past, the widespread effort to rewrite history deepens societal divides and fosters a sense of national shame, disregarding the progress America has made and the ideals that continue to inspire millions around the globe.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Trump administration did not comment on Rufe\u2019s ruling on Monday.
