Black history is American history at the Museum of the American Revolution<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery day is Black History Month,\u201d Michael Idriss, the manager of the African American Interpretive Program at the Museum of the American Revolution, said. \u201cFor this month, we try to highlight some programs specifically, pulling them out of our core galleries.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
The museum unveiled a new exhibition, \u201cThe Declaration\u2019s Journey,\u201d<\/a> last October in anticipation of the semiquincentennial. Idriss said that many individuals throughout history have been connected to the declaration \u201cthrough their work or embodying it in the content they\u2019re creating.\u201d The exhibit, which took more than five years to develop, aims to highlight those connections.\n<\/p>\n \u201cBeing able to have space for this special exhibition and being able to help connect stories \u2026 helps to show that there was a foundation from the very beginning that was looking at this founding document and trying to find where their story lies within that framework,\u201d Idriss said.\n<\/p>\n The museum will host the next edition of its Read the Revolution Speaker Series<\/a> on Wednesday, Feb. 25, discussing the connections between the Declaration of Independence and the Haitian Revolution.\n <\/p>\n The Free Library takes lifelong learning back to Philadelphia\u2019s roots<\/p>\n The Free Library of Philadelphia<\/a> has tied its Black History Month programming to its broader mission of \u201clifelong learning,\u201d chief of adult services and programs Veronica Britto said. This year\u2019s programming revolves around the theme \u201cOur Roots Reach Further: 1776 to Tomorrow\u201d to align with the America 250 celebrations.\n<\/p>\n \u201c[It\u2019s] saying, as African Americans in Philadelphia [and] in the United States, we connect back to 1776\u00a0\u2026 we honor all of that history, that family togetherness, that drive that made Philadelphia as great as it is today,\u201d Britto said. \u201cWe look to our young people to continue on that legacy.\u201d\n<\/p>\n The Free Library\u2019s year-round programming includes Hyperlocal Heritage<\/a>, ongoing events in neighborhood libraries that help local African Americans \u201cdig into their genealogy\u201d using the library\u2019s resources, Britto said. The library also offers free courses on digitizing family records and photographs, as well as access to historical Black newspapers and the archives of The Philadelphia Tribune.\n<\/p>\n \u201cOur director often says the library is the people\u2019s university,\u201d Britto said. \u201cWe\u2019re making information and entertainment and community-building accessible to all people so that no one feels like they are alone.\u201d\n<\/p>\n Examining the \u2018Black imagination\u2019 expressed through art and film<\/p>\n AAMP<\/a>\u2019s current special exhibition, \u201cRuth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design,\u201d <\/a>highlights the inspiration Carter has drawn from both Afrofuturism and American history in her award-winning design career, which includes work on films like \u201cBlack Panther\u201d and \u201cMalcolm X.\u201d The museum has built its Black History Month programming around the display, which runs through September.\n<\/p>\n The museum is also hosting a screening of the 1988 Keenen Ivory Wayans comedy \u201cI\u2019m Gonna Git You Sucka\u201d \u2014 which Carter worked on \u2014 on Saturday, Feb. 21, in partnership with the Philadelphia Film Society, and is celebrating \u201cEveryday Freedom Heroes\u201d with a kid-friendly costume event on Sunday, Feb. 22.\n<\/p>\n Curator Michael Wilson said that the Carter exhibition allows visitors to not only better understand her design process, but also see how \u201cher movies and her artistic practice may inspire youth through the characters.\u201d\n<\/p>\n The exhibit helps the museum fulfill its mission statement by examining \u201cthe Black imagination and the way you can activate the imagination through costume design,\u201d he added.\n<\/p>\n \u201c[You can] also look at African arts, African American art, history and culture, and the way that it\u2019s influenced within film,\u201d he said. \u201cEven though [Black Panther] is talking about a mythical Wakanda \u2026 when you look at Ruth Carter\u2019s costume design, you see how she\u2019s pulling from specific African culture.\u201d\n<\/p>\n Meanwhile, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, February serves as a spotlight on programming that continues throughout the year. Year-round Black Art, Black Voices<\/a> tours help school groups and members of the public \u201cexplore the multiplicity of narratives that Black artists share,\u201d deputy director Audrey Hudson said.\n<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re civic partners to this city, [and] we want to be enmeshed in everything that goes on in this city,\u201d Hudson said.
