A dramatic ice rescue unfolded early Sunday morning in Erie.<\/p>\n
Around 2:30 a.m., firefighters were called to 1 Ore Dock Road after a person fell through the ice near the port. Crews quickly located the victim, who was freezing and unable to escape on their own, about 500 to 800 feet offshore.<\/p>\n
Firefighters in dry suits and an ice rescue boat worked together with the U.S. Coast Guard to reach the victim. The person was pulled to safety using tether lines and a ladder system, then taken to the hospital for treatment of hypothermia.<\/p>\n
One firefighter was also injured during the rescue and was hospitalized.
