DUNMORE, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) \u2014 A police pursuit that began with reports of gunfire during a domestic disturbance in New York crossed state lines Tuesday morning and ended on Interstate 81 in Scranton, according to Pennsylvania State Police.<\/p>\n
Troopers at the Gibson barracks were alerted around 9:45 a.m. by the Broome County, New York 911 Center about an active chase heading toward Pennsylvania. Authorities in New York had been responding to a reported domestic incident involving shots fired when the suspect fled in a black 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe with New York registration, refusing to stop for police.<\/p>\n
The vehicle entered Interstate 81 South in New York and continued into Pennsylvania, where state police assumed primary responsibility for the pursuit.<\/p>\n
Investigators said the driver sped through Susquehanna County, nearly causing several crashes and striking a tractor-trailer during the chase. Troopers attempted to deploy spike strips multiple times, but those efforts were unsuccessful. The pursuit continued into Lackawanna County with additional units assisting.<\/p>\n
The chase ended near mile marker 191 south in Scranton when troopers used a Precision Immobilization Technique, commonly known as a PIT maneuver, to bring the SUV to a controlled stop. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.<\/p>\n
The vehicle was towed to the state police barracks in Dunmore for further examination. Authorities said a background check showed the suspect has a prior conviction in New York for criminal possession of a weapon.<\/p>\n
State police have requested a search warrant for the vehicle, and additional charges are expected.
