{"id":116697,"date":"2026-02-18T03:03:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T03:03:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/116697\/"},"modified":"2026-02-18T03:03:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T03:03:07","slug":"clergy-abuse-survivors-in-south-jersey-to-receive-180-million-in-proposed-settlement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/116697\/","title":{"rendered":"Clergy abuse survivors in South Jersey to receive $180 million in proposed settlement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"P3TCP3K4RRA4BBLQHEMO7G37CY\">The Diocese of Camden announced a proposed $180 million settlement on Tuesday to resolve claims by hundreds of childhood victims who suffered sexual abuse over the years at the hands of the clergy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BRHV7BVHVBHIJDZ3VL2J4KTAMM\">Church officials said the plan, which was filed in its ongoing bankruptcy case, will establish a trust funded by the diocese, its parishes and the various insurers that insured the diocese in the past.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"J5BTUKUE2ZB37LP2E7E6QGPPVY\">\u201cFor the survivors of South Jersey, this day is long overdue and represents a milestone in their journey toward restored justice and the healing and recognition they have long sought and deserve,\u201d said Bishop Joseph Williams in a letter to the diocese. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TF5YI3J5HZFINCUNXXJT7FCJJI\">The flood of victims, now all adults, led to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/news\/2020\/10\/one-nj-catholic-diocese-has-filed-for-bankruptcy-will-the-other-4-follow.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the diocese seeking bankruptcy protection in 2020<\/a>, in the wake of an extension of time allowed to file for recompense under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/news\/2020\/01\/catholic-fund-has-paid-out-millions-to-nj-priest-sex-abuse-victims-friday-is-the-last-day-to-apply.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">New Jersey Independent Victims Compensation Program<\/a>. Those claims left the church with mountains of debt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CSYCYQTLWVHDJFXEAIPEJYYZII\">\u201cTo each one of those survivors, I would like to say thank you for your courage in coming forward. Without your bravery and persistence, this new day would not have dawned,\u201d wrote the bishop. \u201cI am profoundly sorry for what you have suffered. It was a grave sin and a devastating betrayal of the trust you placed in the church that you loved. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WPDCCYB6RVBGXG55UN34GYJN5E\">\u201cI cannot remove the scars you carry nor restore the innocence you lost, but on behalf of my predecessors and the faithful of Camden I can say clearly and without reservation we believe you, we are sorry and we are committed to walking a different path going forward with you, God willing, at our side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OIYNSALSPFCBRGUPXRS7QCVWCY\">Because the settlement was approved by the diocese, its insurers, and the committee representing victims, the judge is expected to approve it. How much each individual receives will be determined by a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge, according to attorneys representing individuals who made claims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HPLVIMKLUVGLJMGRUUFGF26C2E\">The Camden diocese oversees nearly half a million Catholics in 62 parishes in Atlantic, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QGJMLG2V7ZFYTEZLVHVE3YK2KI\">While the proposed settlement is large, it remains dwarfed by $880 million settlement that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/10\/17\/g-s1-28660\/archdiocese-los-angeles-settlement-abuse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/10\/17\/g-s1-28660\/archdiocese-los-angeles-settlement-abuse\">Archdiocese of Los Angeles agreed to pay<\/a> in 2024 to victims of clergy sexual abuse there that dated back decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5Z637VULCZB7RCSG2YCQ6SJSRQ\">In Camden, more than 300 claims have been filed by sexual abuse survivors. How much each are awarded will be determined by the court, according to attorneys involved in the negotiations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"K2RJQP4AGRECTF2Z2UYKBJCW64\">A committee charged with protecting the interests of approximately 330 survivors of sexual abuse who were among the bankruptcy creditors said the settlement was more than six times the amount originally proposed in the diocese\u2019s 2021 reorganization plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"23DH5YADPVFRDBGD3USH32INO4\">Jeffrey D. Prol, an attorney for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowenstein.com\/people\/attorneys\/jeffrey-prol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Lowenstein Sandler<\/a> of Roseland who represented the committee with others, said he was \u201cin awe of the fortitude of these survivors, who have waited years to receive compensation for the horrible wrongs they have suffered,\u201d adding that he was hopeful that resolving the bankruptcy case \u201cwill prove to be a step forward in their personal recovery journeys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"V3VP4QRWSJE5PBT743ZIZD7SDU\">Another lawyer who represented victims of abuse in the diocese, Greg Gianforcaro, said that after decades of being ignored and dismissed, survivors of sexual abuse in the diocese finally reached a measure of accountability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2WZZKPKFTZATJH4EGPYPOR5K3I\">\u201cTheir persistence in standing up to those who harmed them made this moment possible,\u201d Gianforcaro said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"A2J6LGFF7RHZRBZWAVPTYAWVYQ\">In addition to the monetary compensation, attorneys John Baldante and Gabriel Magee, whose clients were involved in the court action, said the diocese agreed to many non-monetary provisions of the settlement, including production of all files for priests who have been accused of abuse during more than five years of litigation in the bankruptcy system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7XD7ATXKTJG57L7FJHNOEXX5DI\">The bishop said his approval of the agreement was given with the overwhelming support of the Diocese\u2019s College of Consultors and the Diocesan Finance Council, who put \u201ccompassion for the survivors at the forefront of their decision-making,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LF53IRRDSNADJBH3PQEXMOX2YU\">In his letter, he credited both for the willingness \u201cto make a significant financial stretch in order to make the church\u2019s concern for the survivors even more credible.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Diocese of Camden announced a proposed $180 million settlement on Tuesday to resolve claims by hundreds of&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":116698,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[8],"tags":[35272,55480,69,71,70],"class_list":{"0":"post-116697","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-philadelphia","8":"tag-catholic","9":"tag-diocese-of-camden","10":"tag-philadelphia","11":"tag-philadelphia-headlines","12":"tag-philadelphia-news"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/116697","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=116697"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/116697\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/116698"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=116697"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=116697"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=116697"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
