Johnson & Johnson on Wednesday announced a more than\u00a0$1 billion\u00a0investment in a\u00a0new\u00a0next generation cell therapy manufacturing facility\u00a0in\u00a0Pennsylvania\u00a0that will provide\u00a04,000 construction jobs and 500 skilled biomanufacturing jobs\u00a0once\u00a0it is\u00a0fully operational.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The\u00a0site in\u00a0Lower Gwynedd,\u00a0Montgomery County,\u00a0which\u00a0is about\u00a060 miles from J&J\u2019s New Brunswick headquarters,\u00a0will further expand the\u00a0company\u2019s U.S. manufacturing capacity\u00a0for\u00a0its\u00a0pipeline\u00a0of medicines for cancer, immune-mediated and neurological diseases.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The announcement is part of the\u00a0company\u2019s previously announced\u00a0$55 billion\u00a0U.S. investment in manufacturing, research and development, and technology through early 2029. This includes new construction and major capacity expansions\u00a0concentrated\u00a0mainly in\u00a0North Carolina and Pennsylvania\u00a0as part of a coordinated domestic manufacturing initiative.\u00a0<\/p>\n
J&J\u00a0already has 10 facilities in Pennsylvania, with an estimated annual economic impact of about\u00a0$10 billion, the company said\u00a0in its\u00a0announcement<\/a>. This includes\u00a0more than\u00a02\u00a0million square feet\u00a0dedicated to manufacturing, research,\u00a0distribution,\u00a0and offices.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cPennsylvania is a powerhouse for innovation and manufacturing in the life sciences,\u201d\u00a0Gov.\u00a0Josh Shapiro\u00a0said. \u201cJust a few years ago we\u00a0weren\u2019t\u00a0even on the field\u00a0\u2013\u00a0but today\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0competing and winning.\u00a0We\u2019ve\u00a0done it by creating the first economic development plan for Pennsylvania in\u00a0two\u00a0decades, and following through on it by cutting red tape, making strategic investments in key industries like the life sciences, and strengthening our workforce.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Shapiro said companies\u00a0such as Johnson & Johnson are choosing to\u00a0\u201cdouble down on their investments here in our Commonwealth because they know\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0got the strategy, the workforce, and the speed they need to succeed.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
