Born January 1, 1942 to Ben and Sara Cohn, Stuart grew up in

Pennside. An excellent student at Mount Penn High, he matriculated at Cornell University,

graduating in 1963. Following Cornell, Stuart earned his Doctor of Optometry Degree at the

Pennsylvania College of Optometry.

In 1967, Stuart joined his father-in-law, Joseph Liefter, in a family optometric practice which

began in 1904. Ultimately taking over the entire practice in 1976, Stuart became a staple of the

Reading community, serving as President of the Pennsylvania Optometric Association in 1986.

Over his 52 year career before retiring in 2020, Stuart served and was beloved by thousands of

patients, including many Reading families spanning multiple generations.

Stuart’s greatest love and joy in life was his family. Stuart fell completely head over heels for his

future wife, Carol, from the moment he took her to a middle school dance. From that moment on,

Carol was his lifelong companion and best friend.

Marrying in 1964, the couple celebrated their 61st anniversary this year, and were still

completely in love. There was nothing they wouldn’t do for one another. Stuart also had deep

affection for, and is survived by his son, Steve, his wife Aleta, and his grandson, Ariel, whom he

absolutely cherished. He also considered Trinh and Tony Nguyen of Mobile, AL and their three

children his spiritual family, never failing to mention and even brag about them all with great

love, pride and admiration. Stuart was close with his sister-in-law, Susan Zuckert, her son

Andrew, his wife Karen and their children, as well as Sue’s son Tim, his children and husband,

John. Stuart also had many first cousins he loved dearly, as well as their children and hundreds

of very close friends.

Beyond family and friends Stuart had many other passions. He was a multi-genre music

aficionado, but especially in classical and opera. An ardent supporter of the arts and music in

Reading, Stuart served as Vice President of the Reading Symphony Orchestra, as President of

Friends of Chamber Music, and was on the selection committee for the Star Series. He was also

an avid and accomplished fly fisherman, and a dedicated Philadelphia sports fan who adored

watching the Eagles and Phillies. Stuart also enjoyed travel with Carol, visiting roughly 70

countries over their years together.

Honesty, empathy and service to his fellow human meant everything to Stuart. He was a man of

character who will be missed by all who knew him.

Charitable memorial contributions can be made to The Reading Symphony Orchestra, 100 N. 5th

St., Reading, PA 19601

Dr. Stuart S.
