{"id":118829,"date":"2026-02-20T06:16:12","date_gmt":"2026-02-20T06:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/118829\/"},"modified":"2026-02-20T06:16:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-20T06:16:12","slug":"penndot-provides-scranton-to-nyc-passenger-railroad-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/118829\/","title":{"rendered":"PennDOT provides Scranton to NYC passenger railroad update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">SCRANTON, LACAKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE\/WYOU) \u2014 Talks of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.2822news.com\/news\/local-news\/passenger-railroad-one-step-closer-to-connecting-nyc-to-the-region\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:passenger train connecting Scranton and New York City;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">passenger train connecting Scranton and New York City<\/a> continued Thursday night as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) weighed in on where the project stands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/scranton-nyc-railroad-public-meeting-200044563.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:virtual meeting;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">virtual meeting<\/a> was held to discuss route options, locations for potential stops, and an overview of the progress so far.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">After more than 50 years, a passenger route connecting Scranton to New York City could finally be back in business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.2822news.com\/news\/local-news\/passenger-railroad-one-step-closer-to-connecting-nyc-to-the-region\/?ipid=promo-link-block1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Passenger railroad one step closer to connecting NYC to the region;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"> Passenger railroad one step closer to connecting NYC to the region <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While the project is still in the early stages of planning, the line shows a promising future for business and travel in northeast Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">PennDOT discussed two potential routes between the two cities and both would involve a roughly 3-hour trip to and from the Steamtown Station, but, as of now, it would not be a nonstop trip.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Officials with PennDOT say the infrastructure is, for the most part, already in place but still needs to be evaluated for potential upgrades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While talk of the project has been circulating for years, this is the most progress that\u2019s been made towards getting it off the ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Angela Watson, Director of the PennDOT Bureau of Rail, Freight, Ports and Waterways, said, \u201cWe know there\u2019s a long history with the project but we finally do have the financial opportunity through the federal government to move through this corridor ID program. So, we are very hopeful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While the project is not a done deal the discussions happening now are promising and show potential in restoring passenger service between the two cities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
