A Cumberland County man led law enforcement officers on a high-speed chase with speeds reaching 100 mph that started in New York and ended in Scranton with his arrest.<\/p>\n
Diriki Birden, of 16 Carlton Ave., Carlisle, faces charges of fleeing from law enforcement during an incident that began Tuesday in Binghamton, New York.<\/p>\n
District Judge Alyce Farrell denied him bail at an arraignment the same day.<\/p>\n
According to the criminal complaint, at about 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, the Binghamton Police Department responded to the report of shots fired into an occupied house during a domestic dispute in the city.<\/p>\n
Responding officers soon learned the suspect, later identified as Birden, fled the scene in a stolen Hyundai Santa Fe. Officers later located Birden and attempted to stop him as he was fleeing on Interstate 81 south, but he failed to stop.<\/p>\n
When Birden, 53, crossed the state line, Pennsylvania State Police joined the chase, ultimately using a precision immobilization technique (PIT) to stop the fleeing vehicle on I-81 in Scranton. The maneuver forced the car to abruptly turn 180 degrees, stall and then stop.<\/p>\n
Birden got out of the car and state police approached. He tensed up and wouldn\u2019t provide his hands to troopers, who forcibly placed him in handcuffs.<\/p>\n
Birden faces a felony charge of fleeing and eluding police officers, as well as charges of recklessly endangering another person and resisting law enforcement.<\/p>\n
