{"id":121237,"date":"2026-02-23T14:15:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T14:15:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/121237\/"},"modified":"2026-02-23T14:15:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T14:15:11","slug":"pennsylvania-hospital-to-transform-building-into-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/121237\/","title":{"rendered":"Pennsylvania Hospital to transform building into museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From Philly and the Pa. suburbs to South Jersey and Delaware, what would you like WHYY News to cover? <a href=\"#Section1\">Let us know!<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>More than two decades before the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia, notable figures like Benjamin Franklin and Dr. Thomas Bond opened the country\u2019s first legally chartered hospital in the birthplace of the United States.\n<\/p>\n<p>Now, Pennsylvania Hospital will celebrate its 275th anniversary by transforming its original location, the Pine Building, into a museum, which is scheduled to open to the public on May 8.\n<\/p>\n<p>The project will join the <a href=\"https:\/\/america250.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">America250<\/a> program of events marking the country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/series\/philadelphia-250\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">semiquincentennial<\/a> anniversary this summer.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so excited to present this to the public in a way that it\u2019s never been presented before,\u201d said Stacey Peeples, curator and lead archivist at the Pine Building. \u201cI want people to flood in here. I want it to be a good experience for Philadelphia. And I think it will be. (Courtesy of Penn Medicine)\n<\/p>\n<p>Pennsylvania Hospital, now part of the Penn Medicine network, was <a href=\"https:\/\/founders.archives.gov\/documents\/Franklin\/01-04-02-0032\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">founded in 1751<\/a> \u201cfor the reception and cure of poor sick persons\u2026free of charge.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Museum visitors will be able to sit in the original surgical theater, where doctors performed amputations and other operations before live audiences, only some of them medical students. The patients were often conscious or plied with alcohol for the pain as anesthesia wasn\u2019t invented until the 1840s.\n<\/p>\n<p>People can also tour the medical library, which has a collection of more than 13,000 written volumes and texts dating back to the 15th century.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-732364 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/matrons-log-NL-22026.jpeg\" alt=\"Historic Matron longs from Pennsylvania Hospital\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1001\"  \/>Pennsylvania Hospital, part of the Penn Medicine network, will turn the historic Pine Building into a museum in 2026. (Courtesy of Penn Medicine)\n<\/p>\n<p>Archivists and historians are also restoring what was the original apothecary, which stored medicinal herbs, minerals and other substances used in treatments.
