The project capitalized on outdated zoning laws and a city still chipping away at the rust left by the collapse of Bethlehem Steel. Of the warehouse’s one million square feet, not a single foot was planned with the city’s long-term needs in mind.

Only through the volunteer efforts and mobilization of the Stop the Wood Ave Warehouse Coalition did City Hall gain the support and confidence to oppose the development. After 15 months of deliberation, the Easton Planning Commission unanimously voted “no” on the project. More than 1,200 pages and 150 documents were reviewed by the commission, and its members cited numerous grievances — grievances the developer has ignored by filing suit against the city.

Yet for a campus that prides itself on community engagement, student participation was limited. Posters hung inside Mojo and ThreeBirds, a town hall was hosted on campus and our own professors served as expert witnesses — yet only a handful of students were present at the hearings, and even fewer participated independently of a class requirement. Perhaps many students felt the project did not concern them. After all, the warehouse was proposed “off campus.” But this warehouse could have become our new permanent neighbor.

Prospective students arriving by Route 22 would have seen the warehouse dominating a hill before catching their first glimpse of campus. Students visiting the Silk Mill would see it looming over the valley — evening runs to Owowcow would have occurred under the glow of warehouse lights. This was not merely an environmental dispute or a zoning technicality. Steady truck traffic and a round-the-clock operation would have reshaped not only the skyline but also the daily landscape of student life.

The Lehigh Valley is among the fastest-growing markets in the Northeast, with Northampton County attracting new residents at one of the highest rates in the country. Easton and surrounding municipalities must address this demand, but the Wood Avenue Warehouse proposal failed to do so. Although residents triumphed in December, this warehouse will not be the last proposal to reshape Easton’s landscape. If we do not question farmland being paved over in Forks Township, we should not be surprised when historic buildings downtown are replaced by large-scale commercial developments.

Our campus often speaks about community engagement, yet when our own physical environment was at stake, our presence was minimal. Students are uniquely positioned to influence local decisions, and our absence signaled a broader disconnect from the community we inhabit. The warehouse proceedings revealed how easily a campus can exist beside a city without fully engaging in it.

We take part in the annual festivals, farmers markets and karaoke Wednesdays. Our motto, “cur non,” asks why not take initiative. When decisions shaping our community are happening minutes from campus, the question answers itself.

The next time our shared environment is on the agenda at City Hall, the room should look different. Debate over the future of the Wood Avenue property continues, and Easton will keep evolving — whether students choose to engage in that evolution or not. For the few years we share this city with its residents, we should make a deliberate effort to join our voices with theirs.

Harrison Zoller ’27 is an environmental studies and English double major at Lafayette College. This essay seeks to encourage the student body to play a larger role in Easton’s civic processes.

When hearings began for the Wood Avenue warehouse proposal, Easton residents were tasked with figuring out how to…

[14
153,155,154
post-125193","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-bethlehem","tag-bethlehem","tag-bethlehem-headlines","tag-bethlehem-news
["GET
