They’d also allowed just 14.6 points per game (and 20.4 for the whole season). This year, scoring is up in Pittsburgh, as the Steelers are averaging 25 points per game. They’re also allowing more, as teams are scoring 23.3 points per game in 2025.

Still, the overall effort has the Steelers looking like playoff contenders, especially since they’re in first place of the AFC North. Yet, that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement in Pittsburgh.

One area the team is seeking upgrades is at the receiver position. Recently, ESPN’s Matt Bowen and Jeremy Fowler felt like the Steelers could be an ideal fit to trade for Miami Dolphins receiver Jaylen Waddle.

“The team does not plan to trade the player, but interest is there. While Miami could be tempted to trade players due to its 1-6 record, Waddle is a building block on offense, and he’s due $36.1 million in cash over 2025-26 — reasonable for a high-end receiver these days. Multiple league execs expect the Dolphins’ no-trade stance to stand, barring a surprise.”

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on Jaylen Waddle

As much as the Dolphins have struggled this season, Waddle is on track for a respectable 984 yards this season. That places him just shy of what would be the fourth 1,000-yard season of his career, but perhaps landing in Pittsburgh could put him back on pace.

Waddle is far and away the best pass-catcher left in Miami following Tyreek Hill’s season-ending injury. After all the heat that’s been on general manager Chris Grier and head coach Mike McDaniel to perform in what’s been the ugliest season imaginable, trading one of their best players may not be on their immediate itinerary. After a 1-6 start, the Dolphins are desperate to get a couple of wins, and they know having Waddle out there improves those odds.

Yet, the Steelers and Dolphins have already completed blockbuster trades, even this past offseason when they swapped Minkah Fitzpatrick for Jalen Ramsey. That early groundwork could lay the pipeline to another impact trade in Pittsburgh, if Miami is willing to listen.

Related: NFL Report Card: Grading All 32 Teams Ahead of NFL Week 8

 Sports fan since birth.
