Thursday, March 5: \u201cFIERCE: Pittsburgh: Opening Reception at Silver Eye Center for Photography
6-9 p.m.
The first solo exhibition in the U.S. to showcase the work of artist Ajamu X opens Thursday night at Silver Eye. Featuring 13 portraits made in by Ajamu X last year in Pittsburgh, the new exhibition \u201ccelebrates individuals shaping the city\u2019s Black queer culture today, affirming their place within a vibrant, evolving global archive.\u201d In addition to his work as a darkroom and fine art photographic artist, Ajamu X has \u201cadvocated for Black LGBTQ+ lives through intimate portraits that explore sensuality, gender and queerness\u201d for decades.<\/p>\n

The free opening reception features a celebration of all the portrait subjects included in the project led by MC Marques Redd, live performances by Ricky Davii and Mo Marshall plus open participation drawing from Ball culture traditions. The night also includes Pittsburgh cocktails and mocktails crafted by Hannah Turpin of SHAG and music by DJ Formosa. Presented in collaboration with Rainbow Serpent, FIERCE will be on view through May 2 at the Garfield center. Next up for the boundary-pushing, Pittsburgh-based barebones production company is a \u201cbold yet tender exploration of human connection.\u201d Written by American playwright and film director Annie Baker, who is known for her Pulitzer Prize-winning play \u201cThe Flick,\u201d the play follows five women and one man who are \u201cundergoing a fasting treatment while navigating chronic pain and illness\u201d in Northern California.<\/p>\n

Directed by company founder and artistic director Patrick Jordan<\/a>, Infinite Life stars a noteworthy cast of Pittsburgh acting veterans: Tami Dixon<\/a>, Sheila McKenna, Karla Payne, Helena Ruoti, Cary Anne Spear and Michael Tisdale. A new exhibition curated by BOOM Concepts<\/a> will present a selection of artworks, artifacts, memorabilia and sports experiences \u201cas a way to celebrate teamwork, fanatic culture, personal well-being and the integration of creative media into sports culture.\u201d For its next exhibition project and program series, \u201cSweat and Sacrifice,\u201d BOOM<\/a> is setting up shop at Emerald City<\/a> in Downtown Pittsburgh. Designed to \u201cframe sport as ritual and inheritance \u2014 where sweat builds legacy, sacrifice builds memory and fandom becomes a creative force of its own,\u201d the exhibition will be accompanied by a series of public programs.<\/p>\n

On view through May 1, the project is \u201cshaped by WPIAL athletics, Fifth Avenue High School championship trophies, Kennard Field and the deep-rooted fandom that surrounds sport everywhere \u2014 whether in a small town or a major metropolis.\u201d Celebrate the exhibition launch and raise a glass with the artists at the free opening reception. Sunday, March 8: Pittsburgh\u2019s Hidden History: Behind the Curtain at the Heinz History Center
2-3:30 p.m.
Step behind the gallery walls to discover the making of the Heinz History Center\u2019s marquee exhibition. Whether you loved visiting the \u201cPittsburgh\u2019s Hidden History<\/a>\u201d or plan to see it before it closes on April 4, this event offers a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the research, interpretation and design that informed the exhibit. Museum professionals who worked on Pittsburgh\u2019s Hidden History will host a lively panel exploring the \u201cwacky, weird and wonderful stories that shaped the exhibition.\u201d Spanning centuries of Pittsburgh history, the exhibit includes everything from \u201cspooky artifacts and tiny treasures to extraordinary pieces\u201d \u2014 including many that have never been on view until now.<\/p>\n
