MERCER COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) \u2014 With St. Patrick\u2019s Day approaching this weekend, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and law enforcement across the state are teaming up to launch a special impaired driving campaign, named \u201cOperation Sober Shamrock\u201d, running from March 5 to March 7.<\/p>\n

The campaign is part of a larger \u201cSt. Patrick\u2019s Day Impaired Driving Enforcement\u201d effort that runs from March 7 to March 17.<\/p>\n

During this time, law enforcement will be conducting roving DUI patrols and increased enforcement activities in an effort to curb the number of impaired driving crashes, injuries and fatalities.<\/p>\n

The decision was announced Tuesday at the Hermitage Police Department in Mercer County. More than a dozen police departments across western Pennsylvania will also participate, as grantees of PennDOT\u2019s Municipal Police Traffic Services Program.<\/p>\n

PennDOT and law enforcement hope that enforcement campaigns, such as this, and sustained education programs will help inform the public on state driving laws and the consequences of impaired driving.<\/p>\n
